The short answer
Your quick setup
Three packs per player; two cards per pick. Pass left, right, then left. Build at least 60 cards including commanders from your pool plus basic lands. Drafted duplicates are allowed. Start at 40 life. Four players need 12 packs.
Mystery Booster Commander Edition release notes ↗Four players: packs and deck counts
12 packs total, plus a supply of basic lands. Draft in one circle, then play one four-player game. This applies the published three-pack procedure to four people; the official notes describe eight drafters splitting into two games as the optimized setup.
- 1 commander + 59 cardsMinimum with one commander.
- 2 commanders + 58 cardsMinimum with an eligible pair.
- 60 cards, no commanderOnly for the stated fallback below.
Picking one card or reducing packs per person is a house change. Agree changes before opening packs. Playtest and acorn cards use Limited permissions.
The special partner permission
In this draft environment, an eligible commander with at most one color in its color identity, and without partner already, may be treated as having partner.
Do not transfer it to your regular constructed deck. Read existing partner abilities and any additional limitations on the actual cards.
When assessing a pair, check eligibility first, then check the color identities together. Two cards being legendary is not enough to establish that a proposed pairing is allowed.
Suppose your pool contains eligible mono-blue and mono-red commanders without partner. Both qualify for this draft permission; together they allow blue–red. A two-color commander without partner does not qualify for the same grant.
What if I have no suitable commander?
For the two-color deck described in the notes:
- A monocolored commander covers one chosen color: add the other color to the deck’s identity. At minimum size, use the commander plus 59 cards.
- No monocolored commander covers either color: the stated fallback permits a 60-card deck without a commander.
Announce the chosen colors as commanders are revealed. The fallback uses a command-zone emblem for effects such as Command Tower; it does not change the actual commander’s characteristics. Read the official conditions. This differs from Rulebreaker mana permissions.
Before you sit down
Can I bring extra nonbasic cards from home?
Build from the draft pool, with the permitted addition of basic lands. A constructed collection is not a substitute for cards you drafted.
Are playtest and acorn cards handled like constructed cards?
No. This limited environment includes cards that are not legal in constructed formats. Read the card-category guide.
What should our group agree on first?
Confirm you are playing MBC Commander Draft, have enough packs and basic lands, and know where to find the event rules. Explain any house rules separately so no one mistakes them for the published format.
Round-by-round sequence
- Everyone opens their first pack. Pick two cards, then pass left; repeat until the packs are drafted.
- Open the second pack and repeat, passing right.
- Open the third pack and pass left again.
- Build, reveal commanders and announce any fallback color choice before play.
Commander tax and commander damage still apply. Official draft procedure.
