The short answer

Yes in the checked rules; no in the announced update

The September 25, 2026 rules checked on October 21 include meld as double-faced. The October 19 bulletin announces a change for release. We have not verified a replacement document making it effective. The examples below distinguish both versions.

Will these meld artifacts still trigger Tetzin?

Assume you control Tetzin, Gnome Champion on its front face and one of these cards enters under your control, without effects changing its characteristics. Tetzin checks whether that entering permanent is a double-faced artifact.

Tetzin’s front-face enters trigger, not its craft ability
Entering cardChecked September rulesAfter the announced reclassification
The Mightstone and WeakstoneYes: it is an artifact and a meld card included in the double-faced category. No: still an artifact, but no longer double-faced.
Phyrexian Dragon EngineYes: this artifact creature is also a meld card in that category. No: its artifact type alone is not enough.

These conclusions apply the version change to the official Tetzin text and the two meld cards’ text. They do not address crafting Tetzin or the back face’s transform ability. A “yes” in an older discussion can be correct for the rules used then.

Can Overgrown Pest still find meld cards?

After the announced reclassification

The land option still matters.

Overgrown Pest can select a land or a double-faced card from the five cards it looks at. When meld leaves the double-faced category:

  • Hanweir Garrison: noThe meld creature no longer qualifies as double-faced and is not a land.
  • Hanweir Battlements: yesIt still qualifies as a land.

Under the checked September rules, both can qualify. Choose at most one qualifying card.

Our application of the announced change uses the official Overgrown Pest image and the official Hanweir card text (PDF page 40).

Questions about the update

Did this become effective on October 19?

That is the bulletin’s publication date. The bulletin describes changes planned for release and defers to the official rules. We have not verified that date as an effective date.

Does this stop cards from melding?

No. The announced change removes a category relationship; it does not remove the meld action.

Is this only for Mystery Booster Draft?

No. The proposed change belongs to the Comprehensive Rules, not the draft-only permissions. For a later game, check the effective date on the latest rules document.

The checked rule 712.1 includes meld. The bulletin moves it to a separate section 713; melding still works and it reports no other functional meld changes. This is a general rules update, not a draft-only permission.

Which other interactions should I check?

Look for effects explicitly mentioning double-faced cards. Simply using a meld pair is different from relying on that category. Check the version used by your event; physical printing on both sides is not enough to determine a rules category.

For a creature with a sorcery back face, Tolabow’s card-type check is a separate question.
